From Efficiency to Empathy: The Promise of Agentic AI
Agentic AI is often discussed in terms of automation or productivity. But its real advantage is more important: it gives us a new way to become truly consumer-centric. Instead of relying only on surveys, reports, or historical assumptions, we can now interact with data in dynamic, human, and insightful ways. We can explore motivations, tensions, habits, and needs with more depth and context than traditional tools provide. This shift lets us understand people with greater clarity. That leads to better strategy, sharper creative, and more effective media.
A Multi-Modal View of Real Consumer Behavior
In our Multi-Modal Agent system, the synthetic panel provides the most direct understanding. While MMA includes many forms of intelligence, the synthetic panel turns massive datasets into something we can interrogate, interpret, and act on. It gives data a voice and lets us explore the consumer perspective with a mix of scale and nuance rarely possible with conventional methods.
Synthetic Personas: Human Understanding, Built from Data
Synthetic panels begin with the behavioral foundation provided by Audience Explorer and Acxiom. These datasets cover demographics, lifestyle markers, media habits, category behaviors, attitudinal signals, and purchase patterns, forming one of the most complete views of U.S. consumers. On their own, these datasets are powerful but often abstract. They tell us what people do, but not always why.
Synthetic personas bridge that gap. Each persona is built directly from the underlying behavioral patterns within the data. They are not fictional profiles or marketing archetypes created from intuition. They are structured expressions of real consumer behavior, designed to make the data easier to interrogate and understand. Once the synthetic panel is built, we can ask these personas questions in a structured, qualitative style and explore motivations, needs, tensions, and decision paths with more richness than a dashboard alone would allow.
Synthetic Panels in Practice
An illustrative example makes this clear. Imagine a CPG client launching a new product and seeking broad awareness among the general population. This type of assignment typically starts wide, with a target that could include almost anyone. Without further refinement, the strategy risks becoming too generic to be actionable.
Using synthetic panels, we began by grounding the audience in real category behavior. We built a synthetic panel from the underlying Acxiom and Audience Explorer data, then interrogated those personas to understand how different consumers think about snacking moments, what role the category plays in their routines, and what drives their choices.
Through this process, four distinct synthetic personas emerged that reflect meaningful need states within a general population:
- On-the-Go Snacker: A person who relies on quick, portable solutions that fit into a busy lifestyle. They value convenience, reliability, and products that help them keep moving without slowing down.
- Sports Celebrator: A socially driven consumer who connects snacks with togetherness, energy, and shared moments. They respond to products that enhance game days, gatherings, and active occasions.
- Movie Time Muncher: Someone who associates snacking with entertainment and relaxation. They look for products that complement downtime, comfort, and simple pleasures at home.
- Treat and Reward Shopper: A consumer who views snacks as small moments of indulgence. They seek products that create a sense of reward, emotional uplift, or personal celebration.
These personas are not invented. They come directly from observed patterns in the data, are elevated through interrogation, and are expressed in consumer-friendly terms. Each one represents a different mindset within the broad gen pop target, grounded in real motivations that shape actual behavior.
With this clarity, the team could design communication, creative territories, and media choices that aligned with each audience’s needs. What began as a wide and somewhat vague target became a set of specific motivations that could guide message development, inform context choices, and shape investment decisions.
Meaningful Human Understanding
The result was a strategy and media plan that felt sharper and more aligned with how real consumers think about the category. By using synthetic panels within the MMA system, we were able to segment a general population audience by meaningful behavioral drivers and build work that resonated more strongly.
